Action-packed schoolboy rugby thrills at stadium

The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for multiple schools to play rugby in our world-class Mbombela Stadium.

“We view rugby as a vehicle in developing quality young men on and off the field. The more boys we can get to play rugby, the more opportunities there are for them to be developed not only as rugby players, but also into quality individuals,” said Graeme Stewart, of Curro.

“We also brought the Pumas on board and a player accompanied each of the nine teams for their match. This was a fantastic opportunity for the school players to get to meet the professionals and for the younger teams to literally look up to their heroes.”

In the high school matches, Curro’s u/14 team came off with a strong win the previous week and were intent on continuing this against Bergvlam.

From the kick-off, it was evident that Curro had the upper hand.

The forwards provided quality ball from the contact situations and the backs were able to use the quick ball to break the Bergvlam defensive line on multiple occasions.

Going into the half with a 36-0 lead, Curro continued to dominate the second half adding a further 40 unanswered points to end as 76-0 winners.

In the u/15 match, it was almost a replica of the u/14 match, with Curro showing the crowds high-tempo rugby that was difficult for Bergvlam to contain. The backline players showed great skill in offloading in contact to keep the ball alive. The opposition defenders simply could not keep up. The Bergvlam players did not give up and tackled admirably, but Curro ended the match as 75-0 winners.

The u/16 match was a much closer affair, with both teams struggling to break the opposition defensive line. The contact situations were highly contested, but both failed to convert their possession into try-scoring opportunities. The only scoring opportunities came in the form of three penalties, which the Curro goal kicker successfully took to end the match 9-0 to the latter.

In the first team match, Vlammies were out for a win and to get some pride back for their school.

Bergvlam were able to score two tries in the first half. Curro did not lie down and were able to score a well-worked try of their own going into half-time 14-5 down.

There were a few scoring opportunities in the second half, but Bergvlam had the majority of the possession and used it to score another try. Curro were not able to put multiple phases together and the Bergvlam defence held strong, with the final score 5-21 to the latter.
