Local swimmers create a splash at Mpumalanga Short Course Championships
The swim meet produced a number of notable performances in the water.
A total of 21 swimming teams converged on Curro Nelspruit to compete in the Mpumalanga Short Course Championships this weekend. From the first course, which was the girls’ 12 years and under 400-metre freestyle, to the mixed 15 years and over 200-metre freestyle relay, the swimmers exerted themselves to score points for their respective clubs.
The younger swimmers paddled furiously, and as each race ended, the fatigue was clear on their faces. Parents’ and coaches’ encouragement drove them to complete their races. In all the categories, the determination to finish despite not placing first, was the highlight of the swim meet.

The swimmers braved the icy waters on an unusually brisk day for the Lowveld and put on a display of determination to edge out the competition. There were notable performances from a number of swimmers who excelled in their categories like Lys Banza from Uniswim Nelspruit.
The 12-year-old’s performance on the day earned her the victrix ludorum trophy. Another Uniswim Nelspruit swimmer, Dylan Holtzhausen, was named the junior victor ludorum. The club repeated this feat after Lucy Friedenthal was crowned senior victrix ludorum, with Jacobus Terblanche from Guppie Tigers snatching the title of victor ludorum.
