Uitsoek Mountain Marathon offers keeps runners in touch with nature

The scenic course covers a wide array of flora which provides a tranquil, natural setting for the runners.

The annual Uitsoek Mountain Marathon was held just over two weeks ago at the Uitsoek Plantation about 30 minutes from Sudwala Caves. Already in its fifth edition, the marathon has gained a cult following among marathoners who enjoy a scenic view while running the trail. It offers plenty of indigenous forests and a comradely spirit which has runners returning for more.

This year, just over 200 athletes took on the challenge and participated in the 10-, 20- and 40-kilometre distances. The Lowveld sun was unsparing in its intensity and the runners at the back of the field made sure to stay hydrated and fortunately, packed their sunscreen to keep the sunburn at bay.

There were four aid stations scattered along the route which ensured that all the runners remained adequately hydrated. Quite a few runners packed in the beers as well to quench their thirst along the way.

Photographer and race organiser, Sven Musica said, “Uitsoek 2019 was definitely one for the record books seeing that we had four athletes breaking course records (CR).”
“The Uitsoek hiking trail is a real Lowveld gem with flowing single track through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the area.

“Crossing crystal clear streams and dipping in the beautiful Bakkrans waterfall gave runners the unique opportunity to experience the Uitsoek trail in all its glory.”

Lucky Miya outshone the competition and flew over the course, adding a second Uitsoek title to his belt. The accomplished marathoner smashed the previous course record by 45 minutes.

Musica added, “The 40-kilometre runners were spoiled with endless panoramic views across the Lowveld below. “All in all, we had a really successful day, with smiles and positive comments coming off the route.
