With today being October 29, the idiotic practice of celebrating Guy Fawkes is almost upon us once again where the purchasing and lighting of fireworks continues to be a great bone of contention in most of the neighbourhoods all over South Africa.

Because, some uncared for and unrestrained pets are scared out of their wits, some of the most horrific injuries occur as the terrified, fleeing animals cross dangerous roads causing accidents, jump through plate glass windows, jump over or through palisade fencing normally either impaling themselves or having to be destroyed to be able to cut them out of the compromising situations they get themselves into through their terror at the noise; which I might add, animals hear 400 times louder than we do! 100’s get lost…they just run and run and run to try to get away from the noise and some end up blind or cut to shreds from running straight through barbed wire or electric fences trying to escape the noise and the flashes caused by them.

Why? Why do humans who know all this and some and who are hard-up and struggling to make ends meet, still partake in this completely ridiculous pastime?

Have they all got more money than sense. I don’t think so. A lot of the general population who are normally so much part of this farce actually can’t afford the rockets and the wheels at all and all the other rubbish available too which is a complete waste of money. It must possibly be put down to a social level of low intelligence; surely thinking humans know better?

And it’s not just the pets which suffer! What about some of the injuries incurred by children, where some un-supervising adults are not even aware of the possession by the children of these dangerous lethal weapons, who lose eyes and hands and fingers!

The elderly suffer too; some senile ones have been known to hide in cupboards, terrified about being attacked in their homes and some vulnerable young babies scream all night, upset by the unacceptable noise levels, etc., etc., etc.

Why are these horrible fireworks allowed? Why are they for sale? Why is a pastime so past it’s sell by date, still being celebrated? I make no excuses for the Chinese…need I say more? But when a Retailer like Janelco, so much part of our community where you would think the safety of their customers is paramount, still sell fireworks it makes one wonder, doesn’t it?

The greed of humans sucks!!
