The party claims 2 135 vulnerable children are not attending school in Mpumalanga.
MBOMBELA – In a speech was delivered in the Mpumalanga Legislature by the DA’s Whip, Mr Bosman Grobler after the MEC for education delivered her budget speech, he pointed out that no new schools are planned to be built this financial year.
The said only 29 per cent of grade ones finish matric and a total of 12 135 vulnerable children are not attending school in Mpumalanga.
“How can we expand access to quality education when the department has not been able to reach the target set more than two financial years ago which is to reach 8 000 children who are vulnerable and who are not attending school?”
He also claims as many as 13 732 underqualified educators are teaching the learners of Mpumalanga.
“It is a very bitter pill to swallow knowing that no new school will be built in Mpumalanga this financial year putting more pressure on the existing schools to increase the classroom sizes and more pressure on our teachers to try and teach more children than what they are able to handle.”
