Enduro champ shows yet again how it’s done

Mahoney was the overall winner and also took first place in the open-class race. Barend Erasmus was second in the open class and was also second overall. Unfortunately the same could not be said about third-placed Reinhardt Ferreira. Although he was third overall, he did not take the third position in the open class – it was scooped by Denzil Lawrie.

Competitors had to complete laps with names like Baboons, Gully, Barriers Highway, Zoro, Monkey Climb and Grassy Stage and the route took riders into surrounding hills and mountains. Luckily the weather was favourable. It rained the day before the race so it was not too dusty or muddy.
The Red loop was 37km long and the Green loop 30km. Riders in the open and 200 class had to do four laps of the Red, while riders in the senior class had to do three,  and the masters and silver class had to do two laps. The green class had to do three laps of the Green loop and the kickstarters had to do one.

Barries Barnard was the designer of  a fun, challenging and a tough route. According to Kim Alder, secretary of the club and organisert, the Red loop was the toughest; it had of a lot of rocks on the way. “They were not kidding when they said Barries farmed with rocks. The Green loop was challenging to some but not so hard for others. We had a good day and congratulations to the organisers for an amazing event. The race was quite hard and I was using my 500 bike which is a bit heavy and big for this type of race. With all this said, the bike came through and suited the terrain just fine,” said Mahoney.

“In the first lap Barend and I were riding together, I had to experience the track and in the second lap I managed to put a gap between us,” he added.
Lydenburg riders, Brendan Swanevelder and Clifford McGee, were among the participants. According to Swanevelder, a rider who got a gold medal in the Red Bull Sea to Sky race overseas, the Lowveld Enduro race was fantastic.

McGee said he chose to race in the Green class because he felt he was not ready and fit enough for the Red, although this did not stop the local rider from enjoying the track.
