Bakkie theft

BURGERSFORT – Several empty diesel canisters were stolen out of a bakkie parked at Castle Square near Shoprite on Wednesday morning.

According to the owner, Mr Louis Boshoff, he was planning to fill the containers with diesel that day. Boshoff, who is also the owner of Castle Square, was in the building when the theft occured.

When he realised the containers were gone, he contacted National Guarding Security to immediately check the footage of the building’s surveillance cameras. It showed two men loading the containers into a Shoprite trolley and then walking off.

At 16:06 a guard from National Guarding, Mr Sipho Khumalo, called the security control room informing them that he had caught men matching the description in a field. The response team went out to arrest the suspects and took them to the police station.

“I’m glad that I got my containers back, and although it’s something that can be regarded as minor, is it part of a bigger problem occurring more often. Luckily we had the camera footage to identify the culprits,” said Boshoff.

The suspects were brought to the police station, but the police allegedly did not want to open a case against them. From there they were taken back to National Guarding’s head office where they were released after being photographed.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News tried to get a comment from the Burgersfort police. By the time of going to press no feedback had been received.
