UMP rewards performance
World-famous adventurer and mountaineer, Sibusiso Vilane delivered a motivational talk on achieving greatness.
MBOMBELA – In a quest to reward its most-committed students and further develop their leadership qualities, the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) held an awards ceremony to honour them.
The university’s inaugural co-curricular excellence awards were held recently and students dressed up to receive appreciation from the university’s management.
They were honoured in leadership, art and sports categories.
The vice-chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, said the university needed to ensure that the vast talent that existed among students was recognised.
“We will have the awards every year. We look at students’ performance in sports, art and culture from January to October and reward them accordingly,” she said.
Mayekiso added that it was important to develop the students’ holistically to maximise their excellence.
“We need to show that, in addition to academic excellence, co-curricular activities are also important.”

She said that UMP recognised good leadership among the student community, thus they rewarded student representative council (SRC) leaders for their contribution to conflict resolution between management and students.

Vilane was the first black African to summit the earth’s highest mountain, Everest.
He advised the students to face their challenges head-on and to never resort to shortcuts.
