Food and wine paired to perfection
The winner of the La Bri wine pairing competition has finally been announced.

MBOMBELA – Cheese and wine are important ingredients in the social life of the recently engaged Estee Prozesky. She was recently selected as the winner of the La Bri wine pairing in Lowvelder’s competition. She will receive a wine pairing for her and 20 friends at her home. It formed part of the TOPS at SPAR Wine Show.
The three-day celebration of wine takes place at Emnotweni until Saturday and promises South Africa’s top wine labels all under one roof in the city. Readers were asked to share their favourite food-and-wine pairing, and Prozesky won with her three-course meal. She told Lowvelder that she and her fiancé, Lambert Groenewald, met in high school in Stellenbosch.
Prozesky attended Bloemhof Meisies Hoërskool, the sister-school of Paul Roos Gymnasium, which Groenewald attended. The home-economics class was shared by the two schools on the Bloemhof grounds. They knew each other and were friends, but they never dated.
“You know how it, is in high school you are too shy to say anything,” she said.
After school, Groenewald went on to play rugby for the Sharks, and in Italy and Spain.
Prozesky studied to be a chef, and ended up in Miami working on yachts. She returned seven years ago to take over her mother’s business. Groenewald signed with the Pumas, after playing for the Lions.
“We saw each other again at the Sabie Tube Race. I didn’t know he was staying here. A while after that, I went to a braai. Guess who arrives? This man,” she said. They started dating only two
weeks later, and have been together ever since. On October 5, he proposed and she said yes.
“We don’t party often. We invite people over, eat a bunch of cheese and drink wine. That’s our thing. Oh, and there is always pudding.”
Here she shares her prize-winning wine-pairing:
- Starters: Hot chicken-liver pâté with loads of coriander and garlic served on a dehydrated French loaf – this goes very well with a light wine, a Sauvignon Blanc or Blanc de Noir.
- Mains: Juicy steaks with really tasty sides: mealies drenched in Parmesan and Italian herbs and flash-fried green beans and onions, and original pot bread filled with cheesy goodies. Cabernet or Merlot usually goes fantastic with this meal.
- Dessert: Chocolate brownies with
whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, and sugar-coated macadamia sprinkles served with a light blush.
