As part of its campaign, the Barberton Community Correctional (BCC) unit, working with the parolees and probationers from the local prisons, went all out to clean the Department of Justice’s offices and gardens.

According to Gabisile Mathebula, head of the BCC, the parolees and probationers who have served part of their sentences, complete the remainder by doing community work.

“Today we identified the Department of Justice offices to come and help clean their premises, because they are also our stakeholders. This is part of the conditions of the campaign, with the parolees and the probationers’ duties to serve their remaining sentences working in government departments and institutions,” said Mathebula.

Also present during the cleaning was Popi Nkosi from the BCC, the monitoring official, Maria Sibande, the unit manager, and Themba Ndlovu, reintegration case management supervisor.

Sgt Tutu Nkosi and Gloria Nkosi from the SAPS and UVE respectively represented their offices. They are both main stakeholders of the correctional services.

Thobile Mkhatshwa, one of the parolees who participated in the initiative, said she served 10 days in prison and is happy she is serving the remainder of the year-long sentence outside, doing community work.
