LYDENBURG – A driver of a truck which was transporting cement is fighting for his life following a head-on collision on Friday on the R540 between Lydenburg and Dullstroom.
According to a source who was at the scene shortly after the accident, the truck driver lost control of the truck while trying to avoid a car that was driving in the wrong lane.

As he swerved, the truck hit an oncoming Mercedes-Benz SUV with three occupants.
It is alleged that the truck driver swerved out of the highway and lost control. The truck went off the road and lost its load when it fell over the bridge and landed in the river.
An occupant of the SUV was slightly injured.
The impact of the accident was so heavy it broke the truck’s chassis off the horse, ripped the roof off and left the horse 10 metres away from the embankment of the river.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, the driver was in a critical condition and was transported to Lydenburg Hospital for treatment. He was airlifted to a hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday morning.
