Strikers appeal for food parcels
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has approached Gift of the Givers to assist workers of York Timbers with food parcels.
SABIE – The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has approached Gift of the Givers to assist workers of York Timbers with food parcels.
If the workers receive no help from Gift of the Givers, they are faced with the possibility of a bleak Christmas. They have been on strike since November 14.

Essau Tau, regional secretary of Numsa, said they have written to Gift of the Givers to come on board and assist the workers.
“We are hoping that they will respond positively. The employer has applied the ‘no work, no pay’ principle. However, the workers are striking for what they believe is rightfully theirs,” Tau said.
Among their demands is their right to freedom of association to be represented with a labour union of their choice, allegedly Numsa, removal of the company’s chief executive officer, Piet van Zyl and the termination of Phoenix Security’s contract with the company.
Sixolile Msayi, York Timbers’ country manager, told Lowvelder last week that they were doing their “best endeavours at the appropriate forums to resolve the strike”.
