Social development MEC promises to tackle corruption
Following the public outcry about a lack of information and transparency when distributing government food parcels to the needy, the MEC for social development, Thandi Shongwe, has reassured communities that her department will move quickly to ensure that the food parcels reach the right beneficiaries.
Shongwe, who received food parcels, sanitizers, masks, gloves and PPEs donated by mining company, Sibanye-Stillwater, said it has come to her attention that some communities are not happy with the way the food parcels meant for the needy are currently being distributed.
“I am aware that there are challenges with regards to this programme here and there, but you can rest assured that we are working around the clock to ensure that the food parcels and other social relief material reach the intended beneficiaries.
“These food items are meant for all our people in need during this difficult period and not people coming from a certain political movements, race or gender, as alluded by the general public. This government is for everyone and this department will work harder to ensure that we reach everyone in need at this time,” declared Shongwe.
Shongwe’s department has come under fire, with communities complaining that they can not access these social relief items promised by government.
“Yes, there are hiccups here and there in the system, but we are at work and we are touching many lives. With the help of privately-owned companies we are able to spread our wings to reach more people and communities,” she said.

Shongwe also distanced herself and her department from viral social media videos of ANC leaders distributing food parcels said to be from her department.
“I have seen private companies, different associations and even concerned citizens distributing and donating food hampers to the needy, and I can assure you that they are doing this out of their own pockets. The food is not from the department and the food that is said to be donated by politicians is not ours.

“Our food is controlled and donated by our officials,” she stressed.
She said her department will try harder to eliminate any corrupt tendencies and ensures that social relief reaches the correct beneficiaries.
