Strong winds blow school roofs away in KaNyamazane

Roofs were blown off by strong winds at Masihambisane Primary School over the weekend.

This happened nearly two years after hundreds of houses were damaged by a heavy storm in May 2018.

A concerned parent who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the roofs of three classrooms were blown off at the school that is 47 years old. “Parents were immediately called to assist and kept the roofing in a safe and secure area at the school. We are now waiting for the department to fix the roofing and broken windows before pupils can return,” she said.

Lowvelder Express learned that tents were brought in temporarily by the Mbombela Disaster Management team to cover the roofless classrooms on Sunday.

Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for the Department of Education, said the grades seven and six learners were not affected by the incident.
He added that Masihambisane Primary has the least number of pupils, hence they could easily be accommodated at neighbouring schools if repairs had not yet taken place when other grades were set to return.
“For now, I cannot say when the roofs will be fixed as repairs are handled by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport,” Zwane said.
