Locals step in after house burns down in Matsulu

Goodness Mandlazi (38), an unemployed, partially disabled mother of six, witnessed their one-room, corrugated-iron shack burn to the ground on June 30.
Everything they own was destroyed including clothes documents, furniture and schoolbooks.
Her children range in age from one to 16 years old.

“I was in the neighbourhood when someone called me and told me that my house was burning. When I got there, it was too late and my neighbours had to put the fire out. I am grateful that none of us were hurt,” said Mandlazi.
She revealed that it is still unclear what started the fire.
“The disaster management team came and gave us four mattresses and six blankets so we can keep warm during this time. This situation has been saddening for both me and my children,” said Mandlazi.
Amogelo Dibakoane, a neighbour of Mandlazi, formed part of the team that helped her and her family to construct a temporary shelter.

“We gathered a few materials that helped us put together a shelter for them for the time being. We also got clothes and food from many people who were trying to assist,” said Dibakoane.
Mandlazi’s right hand is disabled and she depends on child support grants.
“It was not a luxurious house, but it was all I could offer my children. We managed to keep warm and I tried by all means to keep it safe and secure for their sake,” she Mandlazi.
