DA puts pressure on CoGTA to complete RDP houses

The abandoned and incomplete RDP houses were found in Makgalane, Malaeneng, Makupung, Mabelane, Maepa and other surrounding villages.

SEKHUKHUNE – The RDP houses that were left incomplete by Limpopo offices of CoGTA in 2014, are nearing completion.

In 2019, the DA launched a petition to force this department to immediately complete over 100 RDP houses that had been abandoned since 2014. The party said they were left incomplete by a contractor over five years ago.

“We are glad that the petition has yielded positive results. The department has started with the projects in Ga-Makofane, Majadichukudu and Maepa villages,” said the DA’s Isaac Makofane.

In many cases, the houses were left without windows, doors and roofing. Makofane said they became aware of the residents’ dilemma during door-to-door campaigns, as many of the potential beneficiaries from the abandoned project live in tiny shacks and mud houses.

The abandoned and incomplete RDP houses were found in Makgalane, Malaeneng, Makupung, Mabelane, Maepa and other surrounding villages.

Motupa Selomo,a spokesperson for CoGTA, confirmed that they were hard at work completing the houses.

“The MEC asked for the department’s projects assessment in the previous financial year, with the aim of finding out exactly which challenges we are facing. The assessment has been done, but it was discovered that there were contractors who vanished with their phase-one payments.

“We were forced to pull 11 contractors from our database. Currently, the rectification programme is finished and other contractors are in position to complete all the unfinished houses in the province,” said Selomo.
