One dead and 14 injured in a head-on collision

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Corolla lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with the taxi.

BURGERSFORT – One man died and 14 other people sustained injuries after a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Quantum collided on the D2537 (old Penge Road) next to the Tubatse bridge.

The Corolla had a crate of beers and chickens in it.

The incident happened at about 15:00 on Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Corolla lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with the taxi. The light motor vehicle was travelling to Burgersfort while the taxi was heading to Praktiseer.

According to the Emergency Medical Service team at the scene, they found two men trapped inside the Corolla.

“We managed to remove the two inside the car. The passenger died at the scene and the driver was rushed to the Dilokong Hospital with serious injuries.

“In the taxi, all 12 passengers and the driver were rushed to the local hospital for treatment,“ said a paramedic who was not authorised to speak to the press.

Limpopo SAPS confirmed that a case of culpable homicide was opened at Tubatse SAPS.
The SAPS said investigations into the cause of the accident and the processes of identifying the deceased
were still unfolding.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety said the preliminary investigations suggest speeding and reckless driving as the possible causes of the accident.

Transport and community safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, urged motorists to drive with caution and observe the rules of the road.
