BURGERSFORT – A 58-year-old Apiesdoring resident is in need of a wheelchair to help him overcome the difficulties he has been facing since he suffered a stroke.
Michael Maloma not only suffered an embolism, he was also left blind after the incident on June 29.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die within minutes. According to the stroke foundation, vision loss is not uncommon after an embolism.
It is estimated that approximately 20 per cent of stroke sufferers end up with a permanent visual field deficit.
“It has only been a couple of months and although I am recovering, I still struggle to move around my yard.”
Maloma, who lives alone in his house, said he receives a monthly pension grant but it does not cover all his needs.
“I am looking for a proper wheelchair. I am really struggling without it. Most of my money is used for the medication to fight the stroke and the blindness.”
