Communities applauded for reduced crime stats
The provincial commissioner went further to highlight the importance of active community involvement in implementing crime prevention strategies, saying the continuous successes in terms of arresting suspects involved in any crime, are largely based on the information that the police receives from community members on a daily basis.
POLOKWANE – There was a decrease in crime during the first quarter of the year 2020. This was according to Limpopo provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Nneke Ledwaba. Ledwaba released the latest crime stats last Thursday.
“The latest provincial crime statistics are from April 1 to June 30. In terms of the 17 community reported serious crimes, Limpopo has achieved a noticeable overall decrease of 32,1 per cent.
“These crime categories include contact crimes, contact-related crimes, property-related crimes and other serious crimes.”
He said for the period under review, Limpopo has succeeded in reducing crimes such as murder, attempted murder, assaults, robberies and sexual offences.
He revealed that these crimes decreased by 39,7 per cent.
“Contact-related crimes such as arson and malicious damage to property have decreased by 22 per cent,” he added.
The provincial commissioner went further to highlight the importance of active community involvement in implementing crime prevention strategies, saying the continuous successes in terms of arresting suspects involved in any crime, are largely based on the information that the police receives from community members on a daily basis.
“These achievements would not be possible without their assistance,” said Ledwaba.
He concluded by urging community members not to drop the ball, but to continue to work closely with the police in the fight against crime.
