Petrolheads and vintage car lovers will be delighted to hear that the GALP Classic Car Rally will pass through the town today, Heritage Day.

This exciting, new, classic rally has been created to replace the Polana Classic which had its last run in 2016 after 21 successful years.

The event will start in Pretoria at the Pretoria Old Motor Club (POMC). It will then make its way to the beautiful countryside in Mpumalanga.

Previous classic car races like the Magnum Rally, also hosted by the POMC, opted to avoid the Long Tom Pass – a direct result of the freight trucks that were constantly driving on this road.

TCLM’s by-law prevents heavy trucks from using town roads and Voortrekker Road leading towards the R36 Long Tom Pass, and the pass has once again gained its reputation as a scenic route.

The competitors will stop to refuel and offer locals a look at the cars at Lydenburg Convenient Centre, Engen. Mohamed Cassim of the garage told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that they will also sponsor fuel towards the rally and offer loads of entertainment for residents who are eager to see these classic vehicles in their original state.

“We will also have a Jerusalema dance competition taking place where five to 10 members per team can participate to win amazing prizes. The whole family can have a fun-filled Heritage Day at the station with loads of entertainment. Giveaways, prizes, boerie rolls and kids’ entertainment will all be provided during the rally’s stopover,” Cassim said.

The classic car entry prerequisite was based on vehicles registered before 1994.
