Ex-drug addicts return home
Known for their addiction to drugs like nyaope, marijuana and cocaine, they have quit their former ways and are ready to live a clean life.
JANE FURSE – Recovering addicts in Sekhukhune are ready to be integrated back into the community.
The Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality has been responding to a call by the national command council regarding Covid-19 to provide shelter to the homeless since the beginning of lockdown.
The final group of former substance addicts, who were housed at the Peter Nchabeleng Sports Complex in Schoornood, returned home to their respective families on Saturday.
Known for their addiction to drugs like nyaope, marijuana and cocaine, they have quit their former ways and are ready to live a clean life.
Some of these ex-drug addicts had initially been referred to Seshego Rehabilitation Centre in Polokwane. Now they have kicked their prolonged substance abuse and are ready for a new phase in their lives.
Makhuduthamaga’s Peter Rankoe, who is also head of community services, reminded the survivors that “even though you overcame your addiction in different ways, remember that recovery is a continuous process. Please continue to do the right thing and don’t become distracted.
“We are delighted that we were able to transform lives and make a meaningful societal impact in our communities”.
He added, “As the country seems to have overcome Covid-19 and moved to alert level 1 of lockdown, the centre at Peter Nchabeleng Sports Complex has now officially closed. The group will now be reunited with their families and be incorporated back into society. As part of monitoring, the municipality will now begin with home visits to ensure they do not relapse and return to their old ways.”
