Cooking up a storm at Thaba Moshate
The participants also used the competition as a team-building exercise
BURGERSFORT – Thaba Moshate Hotel Casino and Convention Resort hosted its first-ever potjiekos competition on Saturday. The event was held at the casino’s pool area and was organised under strict Covid-19 regulations.
It was Thaba Moshate’s first event since the lockdown in March earlier this year. Four teams got off to an early start, setting up their stations and doing final preparations.
The fires were lit at 13:00 with the teams given an hour and a half to prep their meals.
After the fires were burning and pots were boiling, glasses stayed full and different aromas filled the air as the teams competed in a cook-off.
The participants also used the competition as a team-building exercise. Master of ceremony, Peniel Mbhebz, outlined the rules.
“All the potjies must be prepared from scratch. The evaluation criteria for the potjie dish are aroma, colour, taste, texture, ingredients. Our judges also checked for cleanliness.”
Team number four that won the challenge, cooked a beef dish with dumplings. Team one took second place and had a good presentation with a colourful dish and red wine to accompany it.
Thaba Moshate’s general manager, Tshegetso Boekhouer, said the casino is planning to host more of these challenges and invited everyone to join in on the fun.
“The four members of the winning team won a one-night sleep at the hotel, a voucher from Rootz Boutique and a R500 free play voucher.”
