Lesotho nationals blamed for man’s death
LYDENBURG - A man was stabbed about 15 metres from the Kgerekgere Shebeen this past weekend after allegedly getting into a fight with two suspects. It is alleged that one of the suspects hit Lucky Elias Masuku (30) in the eye after his drink was spilled and a brawl ensued. The incident happened at about 05:00 at the Skhila informal settlement, Shushumela.
Masuku was found near an illegal dumping site covered with a blanket and the two suspects had fled the scene. His brother-in-law, Donald Makunyane, found him and took him to Lydenburg Hospital, but it was evident that he had already passed away.
The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his lower chest, left upper chest, right shoulder and another in the middle of his chest. When the police arrived on the scene, Masuku had already been taken to Lydenburg Hospital by Makunyane. Members of the community were furious about the incident and went from house to house to tell Lesotho nationals that they would not tolerate “this nonsense from them”. Steelburger/Lydenburg News journalist, Tumelo Mkhabela, was on the scene Saturday morning and also reported that residents blamed the foreigners for criminal activities in Skhila.

Community members went to the house of the suspects, but they weren’t there. According to bystanders, there were two people who stabbed Masuku. Also read: On Sunday, the residents continued stating their grievances with the Lesotho nationals and chased them out of the area. It is also alleged that the nationals threaten Skhila residents with guns at night and several locals have witnessed and confirmed this. The investigation is pending and no arrests have been made yet. Some of the illegal shebeen owners were also threatened to close their businesses.
