Pedalling to prevent wildfires in Marloth Park

The second annual Chariots of Fire event, a charity initiative to raise money for fire prevention in Marloth Park, will take place on Saturday February 13.

“After the devastating fires in July and August, when several homes were destroyed due to a lack of firefighting equipment and the slow reaction of the fire brigade, that had to travel 50 kilometres to Marloth Park, Chariots of Fire was born,” said Losaan Meiring of Amazing Kruger View Restaurant, where the event will be held.

A few local residents and businesspeople started a fundraising initiative to help acquire a firefighting vehicle and equipment for Marloth.

“We thought a fun run and cycle event would expose our beautiful place to the athletes in the surrounding area,” Meiring added.

“The first one was very successful and around R30 000 was raised. This still falls short of where we want to be.”

These events will be repeated to ensure that Marloth Park can be protected against natural disasters.

The run and cycle routes follow the border fence of the Kruger National Park and allow for a beautiful view of the countryside from another perspective.
