Department of Forestry warns against veld fires

A cloud of dark smoke engulfed Lydenburg on Tuesday August 10 at about 14:30.

The source was an accidental fire that had broken out at a scrapyard in the industrial area. A spark caused the blaze when employees used a cutting torch. Old boxes and other items in the yard caught fire.

N3 Rapid Response was on the scene within minutes and the fire was extinguished by the early evening. The National Department of Forestry issued a warning against fires and cited the high fire index. Municipalities were warned to be on full alert and on standby for any possible blazes. During the winter fire season, a high fire danger index is prevalent on many days and there is a higher risk of veld fires. The department urged the public to remain vigilant and to not start any unwanted ones. Citizens were also urged to monitor the daily fire danger index warning issued by the SA Weather Service at www.weather.gov.za.
