Miners jabbed en masse

Employees of Marula Platinum Mine have encouraged everyone in the sector to get vaccinated.

BURGERSFORT – More than 4 500 mineworkers at Marula Platinum Mine have been vaccinated.

The miners received the one-dose Johnson&Johnson vaccine. The Limpopo Department of Health launched the vaccine roll-out in the local mines recently.

Moses Motlhageng of the Mineral Council South Africa (MCSA) said they would also allow neighbouring mining
communities to use the vaccination site.

“The intention is really to just cover the Marula employees and after that extend the same initiatives to the nearby
communities.”

Employees of Marula Platinum Mine have encouraged everyone in the sector to get vaccinated. “I am also
encouraging all the employees to come in numbers and get vaccinated. In the mining industry, we always adhere to safety measures,” revealed a miner, Thabo Makola.

The provincial MEC for health, Phophi Ramathuba, said the time to be extra careful has arrived. She said
her department is concerned about an upsurge of cluster cases affecting the mining industry.

“We have been working together with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, MCSA, the Department of Economic Development in the province and the mine bosses so that we can fast-track the issue of vaccinating mineworkers.”
