SEKHUKHUNE – A police officer at the SAPS in Schoonoord appeared before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud on Thursday.

Const Happy Ngwaketsi Ratau appeared in court for the crime he had allegedly committed in 2017. The 40-year-old officer was arrested on Wednesday December 8 by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit.

“The arrest is in connection with a December 2017 incident, in which the officer and a colleague stopped a man while he was driving a tractor. The officers searched the driver, and allegedly found cannabis in his pocket,” said Limpopo Hawks spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke.

“The duo allegedly demanded gratification from the driver. It is further reported that a total of R2 100 was paid by the victim to the police and he was subsequently released. The matter was later reported to the Hawks for investigation. After conducting a successful investigation, the suspect was arrested at the SAPS station,” revealed Maluleke.

Ratau was granted a R2 000 bail. His case has been postponed to March 3. Police are still searching for the second police officer.
