Video: Municipal workers strike

Garbage on the streets, turned over dustbins, burnt tyres and palm trees that was set alight, was the aftermath as municipal workers took to the streets in an unprotected strike on Wednesday morning.

The workers under SAMWU marched to town council to submit a memorandum.

Their demands: better salaries, improved working conditions, reduced high tariffs on water and electricity, housing to be given to the working class, removal of the current leadership and the stolen R180 000.

As the speakers were addressing the crowd, some marchers set the palm trees alight at the civic center forcing the fire brigade to try and put down the flames.

Motorists were forced to avoid the CBD due to burnt tyres and the disarray of garbage on the streets.

The Executive Mayor Mike Masina and Nkangala District Mayor, Thomas Ngwenya, signed the memorandum and are expected to respond within 14 days.

By late afternoon workers were already busy cleaning the mess and the Steve Tshwete Municipality hired extra workers and promised the town would be clean by Thursday morning.
