Father dead – no one charged

Four months after a father lost his life in an accident on the Hendrina Road, no one has been charged for his death.

A trusted source said that statements obtained from passengers in the Mercedes that collided head-on with the motorcycle Gerald Viljoen was travelling on, claimed that the driver thereof was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

The man, whose identity is known to the Middelburg Observer, fled the scene of the accident and only reported the matter hours later.

In his statement the man, who is a qualified paramedic and head of emergency services at an Eskom Power Station, said that he was dazed and confused after the accident and was discovered lying in the grass by a Good Samaritan who took him to hospital.

Coincidentally, the case was only reported after the legally required time frame, wherein blood must be drawn to test for alcohol or substance abuse, lapsed.

Gerald Viljoen left behind a wife and a teenage son.

W/O Salome Mazimba of the Middelburg Police said that the police system confirms that no one has been charged yet. The investigating officer, W/O TA Skhosana, could not be reached to shed light on the status of the investigation.

Gerald Viljoen’s wife, Jacqueline, claims that she is living in fear after the man responsible for her husband’s death, has attempted to contact her and has been seen at her place of residence.

“He took away a father, a friend and a husband but is allowed to carry on with life as usual. I just want peace and before he is brought to justice I will not have it.”
