UPDATE: Electrical problem to blame for Mall evacuation

Transformers that caught fire on the Middelburg Mall premises were the cause of yesterday’s evacuation.

Mike Tammadge, Middelburg Mall manager, said that they made the decision to evacuate the building because of the presence of smoke in the vicinity of Checkers.
Initial reports were that there was a fire in the roof of the building. The Fire Department was called to the scene to assess the situation.

Mr Tammadge said that it was established that transformers that overheated, causing plastic wiring to catch fire, was the cause of the black smoke that was visible.
After they received the “all clear” from the Fire Brigade, the mall was declared safe and reopened to customers.

• In spite of suspicions by residents, the power cut in Aerorand was not related to the electrical problem at the mall.
