Mnr. Hein Koch vertel dat hy lede van die Middelburg Marathonklub wat na Loskopdam gedraf het, op sy fiets vergesel het, toe hulle die karkas opgemerk het. Toe hy op pad terug die aardwolf vir sy gesin wou wys, was die karkas weg.
Natuurbewaarder by die Loskopdam Natuurreservaat, Delecia Gunn, het aan www.mobserver.co.za bevestig dat dit ’n aardwolf is.
Sy sê dat hoewel hulle gelaatstrekke dieselfde is as die van ’n bruin hiëna, die aardwolf ’n familie op sy eie is. Die aardwolf het ’n taai tong en hulle vreet hoofsaaklik termiete.
Tobie van den Bergh, vertel dat hy ook voorheen op ’n aardwolf langs die N11 afgekom het.
•Me. Gunn sê dat die aardwolf ook bekend is as die maanhaarjakkals en in die Hoëveld en grasland voorkom, waar termiete volop is.
Hulle populasie daal, omdat boere hulle gereeld misgis vir ’n gewone jakkals wat vee jag en hulle dan skiet.
Die aardwolf se kake is nie sterk genoeg om skape of bokke te vang nie.
Sy is jammer dat iemand die karkas verwyder het, omdat hulle graag ’n genetiese monster sou wou neem. Indien iemand die karkas in hulle besit het, kontak Sjani Campher by 013 243 1434.
