Presidential Protection Unit member killed still not identified

The member of the SAPS Presidential Protections Services who passed away in an accident yesterday around 10:30, has not been formally identified.

Police are awaiting the deceased’s family to make a formal identification.

The member was traveling in Deputy President David Mabuza’s presidential motorcade between Mbombela and Middelburg when the tire of the vehicle he was traveling in, ahead of Deputy President Mabuza, burst, and the the vehicle rolled multiple times.

The accident occurred about 2km from the Arnot onramp, between Woestalleen and Arnot.

Two colleagues of the deceased were also critically injured with both receiving treatment at Life Midmed Hospital according to Colonel Athlenda Mathe.

President Mabuza, former Mpumalanga Premier and long serving Mpumalanga Legislature Member, was en route to Johannesburg when the tragedy occurred.
Deputy President Mabuza was not injured.
