The Observer’s top stories in August
August, what a time to be alive, Hawaii experienced unprecedented fires, Spain won the Women’s Soccer World Cup, and a local gardener heroically chased away a pesky intruder by launching bricks at his bottom!
In this writer’s humble opinion, August is an often overlooked and underappreciated month, warm enough to enjoy an evening on the stoop with friends, but still cool enough to wear your fancy winter attire.
But enough of that, here are the Middelburg Observer’s top stories from August:
The Times They Are A-Changin’ by Matthew Handley.
An in-depth look at Hoërskool Middelburg’s burgeoning Esports scene, where children are coached and trained to be the best gamers they can be.
As someone who has written dozens upon dozens of sports stories this year, this was like a breath of fresh air.
At my wise old age of 22, I still feel very much in tune with the trends and goings on of today’s youth, but boy, howdy was I wrong.
Speaking with John Kim and Karli Roodt, two Esports athletes at MHS, I have never felt more out of touch.
I discovered the world of professional gaming and the jaw-dropping winning sums these Esports competitions yield. I feel it’s safe to say, the future is most certainly online.

Dyllan lights up the world by Sjani Campher.

An emotional and inspiring look into the life of Dyllan Grobler, who, at the age of 21, was told that he would permanently lose his sight.
Sjani expertly retells the journey Dyllan embarked upon, from his sight gradually declining, to his employer at Socrates, Herman van Niekerk, standing by Dyllan and never losing faith that Dyllan would reach his potential.
Dyllan’s colleagues reorganised his workplace so that he could rely solely on memory, he was able to memorise a car’s tyres simply by touching the tread.
Today, Dyllan is flourishing, grateful for the support his friends, family and community have given him.
