Firefighter hijacked by four armed men

Senior firefighter Daki Mabena was hijacked at gunpoint by four masked men just outside his home last night.

Update: Attempted scam on traumatised hijacked firefighter.

Mr Mabena, his wife Khabo Shoba, and their two children arrived at their home in Extension 23 at 20:00, where four men armed with pistols told them to get out of their Toyota Hilux bakkie, get on the ground and not to look up.

Mrs Shoba told the Middelburg Observer that she was hit on the back of the head with a gun after briefly looking up to make sure her children were alright.

The four men demanded that the owner of the car, Mr Mabena, hand them the cash he had, which was just under R10 000.

The family had withdrawn R10 000 at an ABSA Bank in town at 14:00, and they may have been tailed by the assailants after the transaction took place.

The robbers then hijacked the bakkie with Mr Mabena inside and drove away from his family. He was kidnapped for several minutes, and also sustained minor injuries from being hit by the men.

Mr Mabena was then released on a random street corner in Mhluzi with the suspects fleeing in the stolen bakkie.
