Update – traffic gridlocked by widescale flooding

Early morning commutes grind to a halt as several roads are closed due to widescale flooding in Middelburg.

An unusually high level of rainfall throughout the night resulted in inaccurate reports that the Kruger Dam wall burst at 04:30 this morning, with DA ward councillor Hennie Niemann confirming the dam is heavily overflowing.

The widescale flooding of Middelburg South, Groenkol and Mineralia, however, is so extensive that a large mass of water has formed in the field below the Kruger Dam’s wall between Oranje Street and Samora Machel Drive.

90mm of rainfall has also been reported in the direction of Ultra City, and numerous low water bridges and streets are underwater.

A Middelburg Observer journalist responded to the affected areas, where it can be confirmed that Koets Street in Eastdene, Samora Machel Drive, south from Dam Road, and Oranje Street between John Magagula and Soutbansberg are all flooded.

While larger vehicles are able to pass through these affected roads, smaller vehicles have been seen to struggle and become stranded.

The low water bridge in Koppie Street is underwater.

The following streets have also reportedly been affected: Cowen Ntuli (in front of Case); Weeber; Zuid; and Vos.

Chairperson of the Middelburg CPF, Juanitha Groenewald, gave the following update since the previous article: “Just an update on Kruger Dam. A wall did not collapse. It is still intact. The overflowing of water was because of the rainfall we had. Thank you to everyone that updated the group to keep the community safe.”
