Not one, but two brothers witnessed sister’s tragic death

Sad update in Meyer Street tragedy.

It has been confirmed that not one, but two of Janeke Brink’s brothers were with their seven-year-old sister when she was struck and killed by a truck on Meyer Street yesterday.

Eyewitnesses on the scene reported that Janeke had been accompanied by only one brother, but the family have confirmed the two boys were present.

Her eldest brother removed his sister’s body from underneath the truck.
The truck came to a halt on the pavement from where the children crossed.

Janeke’s father is heading back to South Africa from Turkey, where he works, while the kids stayed with the grandparents.

Their uncle and grandparents arrived on the scene where Janeke’s body was covered by a jacket and blanket by Samaritans.

Janeke’s dad serves on the executive of the Sector 1 Community Policing Forum.

Meyer Street, where hundreds of coal trucks traverse daily, was declared a national road in November 2024.
Residents are now demanding action from authorities to keep trucks off residential roads.

• The Middelburg Observer offices are situated on Meyer Street, and personnel can testify to the dangers they face daily to get to work safely.
