Witnesses describe chaos as gunmen opened fire during Middelburg CBD cash-in-transit attack

Witnesses said it, 'sounded like a warzone' when robbers suddenly opened fire on security guards during the cash-in-transit ambush in Middelburg’s CBD this morning.

New information has surfaced following this morning’s cash-in-transit ambush on SADC Street in Middelburg CBD, where two security guards were shot.

The security guards’ vehicle had just stopped inside the business premises when the attack unfolded, witnesses (who asked to remain anonymous) said.

A silver Mercedes Kompressor drove down the one-way street, then reversed and parked close to the entrance. At the same time, a white BMW stopped across the street. Armed attackers jumped out of both vehicles and ran towards the business.

The next moment, “all hell broke loose.”

Witnesses said the seven suspects involved were heavily armed. At least two of the attackers carried automatic rifles, while the remainder were armed with handguns. This confirms earlier reports that the assailants opened fire without warning on the cash-in-transit crew.

As reported earlier, one guard was shot in both legs and another in the arm. The suspects overpowered the guard collecting money inside the business, disarmed one of the officers, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in the Mercedes and BMW.

One of the injured guards was rushed to hospital in a private vehicle, while the second was transported by ambulance. Their conditions remain unknown.

Police have locked down the affected part of SADC Street, and forensic investigators were on the scene for hours, combing the area for evidence.
