Middelburg cash-in-transit guard discharged, colleague remains in hospital
One of the two security guards shot during Monday’s cash-in-transit attack in Middelburg CBD has been discharged, while the other remains in hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
The aftermath of Monday’s violent cash-in-transit attack in Middelburg’s CBD continues as one of the two injured security guards has been released from hospital. The second guard, who was shot twice in one leg and once in the other, remains under treatment at Life Midmed Hospital.
During the attack, which unfolded on SADC Street, witnesses described scenes of chaos as armed men in a silver Mercedes Kompressor and a white BMW opened fire on the cash-in-transit crew. At least two of the seven suspects carried automatic rifles, while the others were armed with handguns.
The assailants overpowered one guard collecting money inside the business, disarmed a second officer, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The police immediately cordoned off the area and forensic teams combed the scene for evidence. The provincial police media office confirmed the incident and stated that the suspects remain at large.
The discharged guard is now recovering at home, while colleagues and family continue to support the guard still receiving treatment.
