Boxer remains in coma weeks after collapsing at tournament

More than two weeks after undergoing emergency brain surgery, Ndodana Ncube remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Zimbabwean boxer Ndodana Ncube is still in a coma following his collapse after a bout at an international boxing tournament at Eastdene Hall in Middelburg on March 26.

Paramedics stabilised him at the venue before transporting him to the King Nyabela Hospital. From there, he was transferred to Witbank Provincial Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Ncube underwent emergency brain surgery on March 28 after doctors discovered a blood clot in his brain. Medical staff attempted to wake him a day or two after the operation, but he never regained consciousness.

Abram Lubisi, chief organiser of the tournament, confirmed last night that Ncube is still in a critical condition.

“He is still in a coma,” Lubisi said.

Ncube remains hospitalised in the intensive care unit at Witbank Provincial Hospital, where doctors continue to monitor his condition closely.

The incident occurred during an international tournament hosted by Ilanga Boxing Promotions, in partnership with the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, at the Eastdene Hall.

• Ncube, the Zimbabwean champion, collapsed in the changing room after he won against former world champion Lunga Stimela in a gruelling super featherweight contest. Ncube claimed a majority decision victory after an eight-round battle.
