Illegal immigrants arrested during Vala Umgodi operation
Approximately 500 cartons of illegal cigarettes were confiscated during a joint multidisciplinary operation held in Burgersfort.
The Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team, in collaboration with the Burgersfort police, traffic department, and immigration officials, conducted a targeted multidisciplinary operation in Burgersfort on July 29, which resulted in the arrest of 11 illegal immigrants and the confiscation of illegal cigarettes.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Masekela Magoro, Provincial Police spokesperson, the purpose of the operation was to address ongoing concerns related to illegal immigration, illegal trade, and criminal activities in the area.
The operation focused on hotspot areas in the Central Business District, liquor outlets, and known illegal immigration routes.
“The joint efforts resulted in the arrest of 12 individuals, of whom 11 were detained for illegal immigration violations, while one was charged for possession of illicit cigarettes and another for assaulting police officers during the operation,” said Magoro.
During the raid, the police confiscated approximately 500 cartons of illegal cigarettes and 200 loose cigarette filters, valued at an estimated R14 000.
“These illicit products pose significant health and safety risks to the community and contribute to criminal activities,” continued Mgoro.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
