Local road users found sober

Sekhukhune District recorded no incidents of drunk driving during the Phuza Weekend operation held in October.

A total of 32 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving in October as part of the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety’s ongoing Phuza Weekend operation.

The operation was conducted between October 17 and 19 in the Sekhukhune District.

Tidimalo Chuene, the department spokesperson, indicated that the initiative, active in the five districts of the province, aims to curb drunk driving and promote road safety.

Chuene highlighted that the recent operation resulted in the arrest of 32 drivers for impaired driving. She said 15 arrests were effected in Mopani District, seven in the Capricorn, four in Vhembe and six in Waterberg.

“The highest alcohol level recorded is 1.2mg/100ml in the Mopani District,” Chuene informed. She added that the department will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to enforce compliance.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye lauded the work of the law enforcement officers.

The MEC further expressed concern over the number of fatal crashes caused by reckless and negligent driving.

She urged all road users to prioritise road safety and make responsible choices. “Let us work together to build a culture of responsible driving and ensure that our roads ae safe for everyone.”
