Fugitive rearrested in Sihlakwane Village

One of the fugitives who escaped from lawful custody in Lydenburg was rearrested after police received a tip-off.

The police tracked down and rearrested escapee Fana Fenyane (38) in Sihlakwane Village, Zaaiplaas, on Tuesday evening. He was one of the inmates who fled from SAPS Lydenburg’s lawful custody.

A multidisciplinary team rearrested Fenyane at about 23:00 following a tip-off.

He escaped from police holding cells with five other detainees in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mpumalanga Provincial Police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe said while the police were on a routine camp inspection, they discovered Fenyane at about 02:30.

After the six men escaped, officers noticed a leaking water pipe outside one of the holding cells and noticed there was structural damage.

“They were alerted to a hole in the wall and discovered that six suspects had escaped. The suspects were arrested for various crimes, including murder, rape, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and malicious damage to property,” Nonyane-Mpe added.

The first to be rearrested was Clayton Flank (37) in Lydenburg, Kellisville, on Sunday morning at about 04:00, also following a tip-off from community members. He appeared before the Mashishing Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi vowed that the remaining suspects will be hunted down and rearrested, highlighting that a probe will be conducted to determine the circumstances around the escape.
