Sekhukhune pays tribute to former mayor Mokganyetjie

Maleke Mokganyetjie is being remembered for her long-standing commitment to public service and community development.

Tributes continue to pour in following the passing of former Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor Maleke Mokganyetjie.

Mokganyetjie’s political career spanned more than two decades, marked by various leadership roles in local government.

She began her service as a proportional representation (PR) councillor in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, where she also served on the executive committee responsible for community services in 2000.

She later moved to the SDM as a PR councillor and was appointed Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Infrastructure, before taking on the Finance portfolio after the 2006 Local Government Elections.

Between 2016 and 2019, Mokganyetjie served as a special advisor to then Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

She returned to local government in 2021 as SDM council chief whip and was elected executive mayor in 2022.

Current Executive Mayor Minah Bahula conveyed condolences on behalf of the council and the municipality, describing Mokganyetjie as a dedicated public servant whose contribution to local governance will be remembered.

A community memorial service is scheduled to take place on April 23 at Luckau Village. A second memorial service for councillors and municipal employees will be held on Friday at the Sekhukhune District Council Chamber in Groblersdal.

Mokganyetjie will be laid to rest on April 25 at Luckau Village.
