Three suspects nabbed in Midrand after trail of robberies

Three suspects were arrested in Midrand after allegedly targeting victims in Dunkeld and Braamfischer in a suspected snatch-and-grab spree.

Three suspects were arrested at a shopping centre in Midrand on March 25 after they were allegedly linked to a string of snatch-and-grab robberies that began in Dunkeld.

According to a statement, released on March 26 by Community Active Protection (CAP), the suspects were travelling in a silver Audi when they allegedly targeted victims and stole cellphones in quick succession.

CAP stated that its control room first received reports of a snatch-and-grab robbery in Dunkeld, where a victim’s cellphone was allegedly stolen. A short while later, the same suspects were reportedly involved in another similar robbery at McDonald’s in Braamfischer.

The control room immediately began tracking the suspects’ vehicle using available camera infrastructure, while information was relayed to response teams on the ground.

“CAP then deployed the tactical area commander team, K9 unit, and field collections officers, while SAPS was notified. The team moved to intercept the vehicle as it continued driving around, with the suspects believed to be looking for further opportunities to commit crimes,” the statement read.

The vehicle was later traced to a shopping centre in Midrand, where three suspects were apprehended. Three stolen cellphones were recovered inside the vehicle. The scene was secured and handed over to police for further investigation. “This operation reflects CAP’s intelligence-led and rapid-response capability, where real-time tracking, co-ordinated deployment, and proactive intervention work together to disrupt crime before it can escalate further.

“The ability to identify, monitor, and intercept active suspects across areas not only led to the successful apprehension and recovery of stolen property; it also prevented additional incidents from occurring. Well done to all members involved for the quick response and co-ordinated effort.”

Midrand Reporter sent a query to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane to confirm the arrests and whether the suspects have been formally charged. Police comment will be published once received.
