WATCH: AK47 ‘pages’ through owner’s manual with ease

Latest finding brings the AK47's score of vehicle components it can penetrate out of seven, to four.

It’s most recent that Shoot Through series has seen its AK47 finally equal the score at 3-3 of items it could penetrate, armoured vehicle manufacturer SVI Engineering’s seventh and latest video sees the assault weapon in question take aim at an owner’s manual.

Watch owner’s manual standing no chance below:

An item, while still present in new vehicles, but arguably also seldomly read, the manual in this instance comes from the previous generation Ford Everest and while thick in appearance, presents no challenge for the AK47.

Using the now familiar 7.62 x 39 mm single round captured on a Photron Fastcam SA4 high-speed camera operating at 30 000 frames per second, the bullet fires straight through the booklet with ease – leaving behind a gaping hole on its way out.

“Obviously, the outcome of such a test depends on a variety of factors, including the selected firearm, the associated round, the distance from the target and even the book itself. But, considering we opted for an assault rifle for this experiment, the owner’s manual stood virtually no chance,” SVI CEO Jaco de Kock said.

Myth busted

According to SVI’s business development director Nicol Louw, the experiment also disproves the often used movie skit of a book or booklet being used to stop a bullet when fired by an assailant at the protagonist.

“[This shows] that carrying an owner’s manual, even from a [Toyota] Hilux, in front of heart, will not protect you [against a AK47],” Louw concluded.

Shooting into the lead

As evident by the sixth video in the series last month that used an electric window lifter motor, the result of the owner’s manual test brings the score to 3-4 of vehicle components penetrable by an AK47 or any type of assault rifle.

In addition to the two items already named, the bullet also managed to find its way through a seatbelt and shock absorber, both providing little resistance.

Components deemed “safe” so far includes an engine block and cylinder head, both from a Volkswagen Polo, and the subject of the first video, a brake disc lifted from a Toyota Land Cruiser 70-series.

The result of how the brake disc fared can be viewed on the SVI Engineering YouTube channel.
