Full entry in main race at Big Z

Next weekend's international historic car racing festival at Zwartkops has attracted a full field for the top-billed Castrol South African Tourist Trophy event.

The race, for pre-1966 Le Mans and GT cars, will be run over 45 minutes, with every car obliged to make a three-minute pit stop at the team’s discretion. Teams may use one or two drivers, again at their discretion.

There will be healthy international participation, with Swedish drivers in two Ford plusGT40s entries and two Lotus Elans; British drivers in a Jaguar E-Type, a Chevron B8, a Lotus Elan plusand a TVR; and Dutch drivers in a Ford Mustang Shelby and a Chev Corvette.

Local drivers who could win the event include Rui Campos (Lola T70 Spyder), Mark and Jonathan du Toit (Lola T70 Spyder), Ross Lazarus (Ford GT40), Sarel van der Merwe and Mike Briggs (Daytona Coupé), Oliver Dalais (Ford GT40),

Mark Lauth (Lola Mk3 Coupé), Keith Hinckley (Cobra), Craig Shorter (Ford GT40), Djurk Venter (Daytona Coupé), plus a new Dart Flamingo V8 in the hands of an as yet unspecified driver. With Mark and Jonathan du Toit sharing the Lola Spyder, whoever gets into Jonathan’s regular Chevron B8 should also be a good bet for a podium place.

Further back in the field, there should be entertaining dices between the various Lotus Elans, a couple of very quick local GSM Darts, the Mpiti Renault of Dennis McBeath, the Porsche 911 of Evert Botha, the Cobras, plus of Gary Swan and Alan Garrow and the Mini Marcos of Shaun Cabrita and Stuart Greig.

Discounted tickets can be bought at Computicket or at the Zwartkops office before the event for R150 (adults) and R90 (students). Children under-12 free. Full-price tickets will be sold at the gate on the day.
