LISTEN: When can South Africa expect to see updated Isuzu D-Max?

Updated version of one of Mzansi's favourite bakkies was showcased in Thailand.

Earlier this month, the updated Isuzu D-Max bakkie was showcased in Thailand, sparking debate on when it would make its way to South Africa.

Listen to Pitstop podcast

In The Citizen Motorings Pitstop podcast, Jaco van der Merwe and Charl Bosch try to determine when will Mzansi get the updated version of one of its favourite bakkies.

It might seem somewhat strange that there is already a facelift version of the seventh generation Isuzu D-Max that only debuted in South Africa last year. But in reality the bakkie was already three years when it found its way to Mzansi. It was already rolled out back in 2019, with Covid-19 delaying its local arrival.

Isuzu has not confirmed a date for its arrival – chances are South Africans will get it in 2024. Pricing and specifications are expected to be announced in due course.

Isuzu D-Max updates

The restyled Isuzu D-Max receives restyled headlights with wraparound-style daytime running diodes, a new front bumper and grille, broader selection of alloy wheel choices and new colour options.

The rear bumper is also enhanced, while the light clusters now feature a three-level L-shaped design motif.

The top-spec V-Cross gets the likes of the Magnetite grille that was first seen on the updated MU-X and newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the updated Isuzu D-Max is a new 7-inch infotainment system, while more premium materials are also used.

The cabin also sees the return of two knobs for the volume and radio tuner.

The Isuzu D-Max’s current engine line-up has been carried over, despite rumours of the carmaker working on a new 2.2-litre engine.

The 1.9-litre turbo diesel mill’s outputs of 110 kW/350 Nm remain unchanged. The 3.0-litre engine produces 140 kW/450 Nm. They are mated to a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The Isuzu D-Max is South Africa’s third best-selling bakkie behind the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger. The three have been ruling the monthly sales charts for a very long time.
