Inland Historic tour delivers magic at Zwartkops

Action aplenty as nine categories took part in two races each.


Historic Car spectacle ruled at the Zwartkops circuit near Pretoria on Saturday, with more than 150 competitors contesting nine racing categories.

Heading up the show were two races for Marlboro Crane Hire Pre-1968 Sports and GT Cars. The day’s first race went to Oliver Dalais (Ford GT40), leading home Peter Bailey (Porsche 911), Jonathan du Toit (TAR Shelby Daytona Coupe) and James Temple (Shelby Daytona Coupe).

Mark du Toit (Lola T70 Spyder) who did not start race one, returned in style to clinch race two from Dalais, Jonathan du Toit and Temple.

Peter Lindenberg (Shelby Mustang) won both the heats for Marlboro Crane Hire Pre-1966 Legend Saloon Cars. He led home Jonathan du Toit (TAR Chevrolet Nova) and Paige Lindenberg (Sabat Ford Fairlane) on both occasions.

The first Pre-1966 Little Giants heat went to Ben van der Westhuizen (Lotus Cortina) followed by Terence Botes (Mini Cooper S) and John Ten Doeschate (Protea). Gary Stacey (Ford Cortina GT) won race two, ahead of Van der Westhuizen and Ten Doeschate.

Peter Bailey (Porsche 911) took the opening race for Pre-1980 Historic Saloon Cars from Richard de Roos (Porsche RSR) and Jannie van Rooyen (Volkswagen Scirocco). Bailey repeated his feat the second time out, this time followed by Deon van Vuuren ((Mazda R100 Rotary) and Van Rooyen.

Dirk Lawrence (IDM Honda Ballade) won both the Clubmans races, with Phil Emmenis (Uniglide BMW M3) and George Economides (Wealth Ave BMW 328i) swapping the respective second and third places.

Both Historic Single Seater races went to Dean Venter (Van Diemen FF), leading home Andrew Horne (Royale FF). Neil Lobb (Chevron B29) and Ben van der Westhuizen (Royale FF) shared the respective third places.

Bert van Aarle (Mazda MX-5) won the first Charlie’s Super Spar handicap race ahead of Rob van Aarle (Datsun 180U) and Althea Pretorius (Nissan Exa). Lady racer Althea took the second race from Rob van Aarle and WF du Plessis (Porsche 944).

The first Monoposto single-seater race went to Damien Archer (FVW Ray) followed by Leon Scholtz (FVW Ray) and Clint Baudoux (FGti Ray). Corrie le Roux (Formula M) won race two, ahead of Archer and Baudoux.

Marius Jacobs (Opel Tigra) won the first Silvercup race, followed by Gerhard Henning (Volkswagen Golf) and Evert Seyffert (Mazda RX-8 Spaceframe). Keagan Pottas (Honda CRX) won race two from Seyffert and Henning.

Rounding out the event were two races for National Sports Cars, both won by Neil de Later (Lotus Birkin) ahead of from Gerald Wright (Sports 2000) and Norman Witt (Lotus 7).
