Action aplenty as Regional Extreme Tour says goodbye to Red Star

No less than two red flags halted the day's racing.


Regional championship circuit competition returned to the Red Star Raceway near Delmas on Saturday, with four separate categories taking to the 4.1-kilometre long tarmac of the Regional Extreme Tour‘s penultimate round.

Saloon cars

Heading up proceedings were two races for the Pabar VW Challenge, of which 35 were entered.

Race one went to Bevin Masters (CPS Warehouse), ahead of his sibling Wayne Masters (Performance Masters), defending champion Rory Atkinson (BHIT), Charl Smalberger (Sabertek) and Dawie van der Merwe.

Atkinson made no mistakes in race two and won, pursued by Bevin and Wayne Masters, van der Merwe and Smalberger.

The opening BMW Club Challenge race was red-flagged after Nek Makris and Lyle Ramsay collided, with spilt fluids turning a part of the road into an ice rink.

After the restart, the ITA Security car of Bennie Luyt blew its engine into a huge fireball, leading to another red flag.

That left Leon Loubser to win from Renier Smith, Mansoor Parker and Anton Pommerstein. Loubser won race two as well, setting the day’s quickest lap time of two min 01.886 seconds in the process.

He was chased to the flag by Smith, Andreas Meier, Parker and Oz Biagioni.

Louis Scholtz (Car Care Clinic Volkswagen Golf GTI) won both of the day’s races for Car Care Clinic 111 Sports and GT vehicles, ahead of Maritz le Roux (111 Plumbers BMW 325i Turbo), Wouter Roos (Car Care Clinic Volkswagen Golf GTI) and Piet Potgieter (Nathan’s Volkswagen Golf GTI).

Single-seaters

The first DOE Formula Vee race went to Lendl Jansen (Bull Security Vee), leading home MD Bester (Mangaza Rhema), Jaco Schriks (DOE Parts Rhema) and Brandon Hills (Mangaza Rhema).

Jansen won race two as well, this time leading home Schriks, Bester and  Hills. 

Zwartkops next

The final round of the 2023 Inland championship will be held at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria on Saturday, 18 November.
