WATCH: Pinetown company goes up in flames after explosion at chemical factory

According to reports from paramedics, two people have sustained life-threatening injuries while six sustained moderate injuries.

Black clouds of smoke engulfed most parts of New Germany and surrounding areas following an explosion at a chemical factory on Otto Volek Road in New Germany, Pinetown on Tuesday (8 December).

Emergency personnel have flooded the area, directing cars as fire fighters are trying to extinguish the blaze.

According to Rowan Scandroglio, Rescue Care media spokesman, two people have sustained life-threatening injuries while six sustained moderate injuries.

Explosions can still be heard metres away from the scene.

Workers from nearby companies have resorted to cutting the barbwire to escape.

A woman, who sells sweets outside the company, said she was told by someone that she needs to watch out as there was a fire inside the building.

“The next thing I heard a loud bang and ran for my life, I am also not sure if there are any people inside,” she said.

People and motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
